Frequently Asked Questions

What is Caketu?

Caketu.com (Cake To You) is a marketplace for celebration cakes, cupcakes, cookies and more.

If you’re looking for a treat or a centrepiece for a special occasion, or you’re a baker looking to reach more customers, we hope to connect you both – making buying a delicious, fresh, bespoke cake easier for everyone!

Why Caketu?

Better for Customers

Caketu.com makes it easy to find the perfect cake by bringing together different makers on a single platform.

Because bakers include their availability, it’s simple to find a cake for the date you need. There’s also the reassurance that all bakers are officially registered with their local council, and all reviews are by verified customers only.

Most cakes can be customised to fit your needs and occasion – change the size, flavour, colour – and you can search by postcode, date, or keyword.

If you want the added personal touch of a name, age, or message on a cake, just search for ‘name’, ‘age’, ‘message’ etc to see what products offer customisation options.

Better for Bakers

Caketu makes it easy for bakers too!

Firstly, the platform is no sale = no fee. So there’s everything to gain and nothing to lose by trying us out.

You get your own online shop, where you decide what you sell, how much you charge, whether you deliver or not, and set your own policies.

It’s your store, your rules. We just provide the shop window and the ability to take payments securely. You’re in control!

Because the cakes you’re offering on Caketu are clear to customers, you’re not wasting time with queries or requests for quotes that don’t lead anywhere, and because the price you have set is clear, there’s no awkward discussions or haggling!

Your availability for each cake and the notice period required is built in, so no having to disappoint people when they request dates you’re already busy, or turn down short-notice requests – they simply won’t be able to book if you’re not available!

We use industry leader Stripe to handle the payments, so that’s all safe and secure, and means there’s no faffing around taking deposits or chasing people for payment.

All this means you can spend less time on admin and more time doing what you love – baking!

Better for Everyone!

No one should have to settle for a lacklustre supermarket cake because arranging a fresh, personalised cake is just too difficult and time-consuming!

Caketu makes it easy to find the perfect cake. No more asking for recommendations in Facebook groups, the school playground, or by scouring Instagram, and then having to contact multiple bakers by text, phone or DMs to try to arrange it.

Caketu makes bakers’ lives easier too, removing the need to monitor multiple platforms and juggle queries via multiple sources, feeling like you should answer queries 24/7, or constantly update a social media feed.

It’s win-win for everyone!

Baker Questions

How does it work?

Unlike most web stores, Caketu.com has been designed specifically for cake makers.

Cakes aren’t like t-shirts or other products that can just sit on a shelf until they’re sold, and most cake makers can only take on a limited number of orders per day.

We’ve planned carefully for all of that, and built in systems so you can set your minumum notice period (lead-in time) for orders, limit the number of days you work, and even the total number of cakes you can accept orders for each day.

You decide if you offer delivery and what the charges are if you do. It’s your business – your store – your rules.

How can I sell my bakes on Caketu.com?

Firstly, you must be an officially registered food business.

If you aren’t registered, you cannot legally sell cakes in the UK, so we cannot host you! But don’t worry, the process to get registered is reasonably simple to navigate. There’s lots of useful information here about how to set up a food business: https://www.food.gov.uk/business-guidance/getting-ready-to-start-your-food-business. It even includes a checklist of things to think about if you’re working out of your own home

I've don't have a Food Hygiene rating yet - I've been waiting months!

Don’t worry!

We know there are long delays with councils inspecting premises! So long as you’re ‘awaiting inspection’, you can legally operate as a food business and register to sell cakes on Caketu. Find your registration page on https://ratings.food.gov.uk/, where it will show the ‘awaiting inspection’ panel above. Or if you can’t find it, email through the paperwork from the council confirming they’ve received your application to newbaker@caketu.com and we’ll help you!

Customer Questions

Can you post a cake to me?

Sorry, but very few speciality cakes are genuinely postable. Baked goods are fragile things! We don’t want to subject them to long journeys, variable temperatures, and potentially getting smooshed in transit.

Caketu.com was set up to connect local people with talented bakers near them, not to offer cake-by-post. That’s why you won’t find any postage charges listed as standard, and the radius search is limited to 20 miles.

Some bakers may offer a delivery option, but that is entirely up to them. and they will set their own delivery charges accordingly – check out their individual store policies for details.

There are tips on how to transport your cake safely here.

Can I get a cake with a customised message/age/name?

Absolutely!

Search in for the keyword ‘name’, ‘age’ etc – you’ll see all the options where customisation is offered. Then, when you complete checkout, you just put your message or other instructions in the ‘order notes’ box.

You can also submit a question straight to the baker by using the ‘Ask Baker a Question’ button on every product’s page.

Do you do vegan/gluten-free/halal/egg-free cakes?

Of course! Many bakers offer a variety of different options.

Search for vegan / gluten-free / eggless / halal etc in the menu, or type the key words in the search bar to bring up the options.

Can I order a cake for tomorrow? Every cake I look at, tomorrow's date is unavailable

Yes… possibly… We do have bakers who offer this, but not all bakers do! The more elaborate the cake you’re looking for, the longer it will take to make, so you need to bear this in mind.

The products on Caketu.com are freshly made to order, there’s no ‘stock’ waiting. This means that you get the freshest, most delicious cakes, but it also means that you need to give enough notice for the baker to make them for you! Some bakers can offer cakes at very short notice, but most will need a few days.

The more advance notice you can give, the greater the number of options there will be.

I'm not happy with what I ordered

Please reach out to your baker in the first instance as they will be best placed to help you. Also check out their policies in their store.

If you and the baker can’t reach an agreement, feel free to submit a query via the Contact Us page and we’ll try to negotiate with the baker on your behalf, but please be aware that your contract is with them, not the Caketu.com platform, so ultimately the buck stops with them.

Are my financial details secure?

Absolutely! We don’t hold any financial details ourselves. We leave all that to our partner – payment industry giant Stripe to safely collect payments on behalf of the Bakers. That way, we are assured that all transactions are as secure as possible.

Stripe.com is a certified PCI Service Provider Level 1 – the most stringent level of certification available, and regulated by the UKs Financial Conduct Authority.

What's the best cake?

Well, that very much depends on your personal preferences and mood…

Personally, we love a carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting. But you can’t really go wrong with a decadent, fudgy chocolate cake…

On the other hand, anything fruity, maybe with cherries, or lemon, is nice?

Sometimes it’s nice to go simple, like a good old-fashioned Victoria Sponge with fresh cream and jam, but there are some really amazing vegan cakes out there too if cream isn’t your thing…

Basically, we think all cake is good. The more cake the better. Enjoy!
